Mount Gamalama name is derived from Kie Gam Lamo ("big country"). Gamalama has erupted more than 60 times since the first recorded eruption in 1538. Eruption caused fatalities occurred at least four times, with most falling victim in 1775. At that time, the eruption of Mount Gamalama eliminate Takomi Soela village with 141 inhabitants.
